Our email deal this week, the 2019 Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé, is literally fresh off the presses! It is the first 2019 Rosé to hit the stores, which is fitting giving the 2018 vintage of the Villa Wolf was our best selling Rosé last year. This wine is produced by the famous Ernst Loosen. In the late 90’s, he found the centuries old J.L. Wolf estate in disrepair and proceeded on a mission to to put the classic old German estate back together. Once the winery was under his guidance, he put Sumi Gerbauer, one of his top winemakers in charge along with her partner Patrick Moellendorf. The dynamic duo oversee the winemaking and the estates three vineyards; Forster Pechstein, Belz and Königswingert or "Kings Vineyard".
The 2019 Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé is produced in the warm, sunny Pfalz region of Germany. The Pinot Noir fruit is gently macerated to extract the delicate salmon pink color in their wine and is labeled as a Weissherbst, meaning that it must be 100% of a single varietal and produced at a QbA or Pradikat standard. You will instantly notice the fresh aromas of perfectly ripe strawberries, peach blossom, raspberry, melon and notes of sweet basil as you pour it into your glass. Down the hatch the wine features a vibrant, fresh, zippy mouth feel, textured by soft red berry fruits and a clean, delicate finish. Definitely a party in the glass and fun to have around if you have the itch for a friendly glass of wine, or pair it up with a broiled flounder in a mignonette sauce, a strawberry goat cheese spinach salad or chilled shrimp. Cheers.

]]>Fun wine tidbit for you. Throughout the southern Rhone Valley, there are many demarcated vineyards and estates that can label their wines as Cotes du Rhone Villages. Outside those classified areas, the landscape is dotted with many more value oriented Vin de Pays wines. That classification is given to a wine with a specific origin, but that may not follow the rules of wine making and vinification for the region. The type of Vin de Pays that many local wine makers enjoy producing is Pays de Vacluse because the terroir is similar to the Rhone valley vineyards, but does not require the strict, and often restrictive, standards that a Cotes du Rhone requires. Utilizing the same red blends, the local vignerons produce excellent Pays de Vacluse wines, meant to be enjoyed everyday and make for great accompaniment on the dinner table. One great example of this is our email deal this week, the 2018 Boutinot Cuvee Jean Paul Vacluse Rouge. We featured the 2016 vintage of this wine a few years ago and said it was a true ‘must have’ at a ‘ridiculously favorable price’. Guess what? The 2018 might be better and it won't cost you a penny more.
The Boutinot Cuvee Jean-Paul Rouge is a classic Rhone blend of Grenache and Syrah produced in raised fermentation vats with a five to ten day skin maceration to bring out the best color and flavors. In the glass the wine is a dark ruby color with a vibrant nose of violet, blackberry, cherry, plum, and blueberry fruits mixed with green sage and forest notes. It has a velvety smooth mouthfeel; overall it is an uncomplicated wine featuring well rounded red berry flavors and a long, supple finish. The bottle comes with a handy twist top so you can enjoy a glass when you want one and leave it on the counter for the next day, no tools required. Perfect for a laid back evening with pizza, meatloaf, or your mama's famous Hungarian goulash. Cheers.

]]>The joy of drinking our email special this week, the 2018 Trust Cellars Riesling, not only comes from its fresh and zesty taste but from the fact that there are only 400 cases of this wine produced. That’s a minuscule amount compared to many of the wines we show off each week. The Trust Riesling actually represents 10% of the total production of the small boutique winery created by Steve Brooks, a former CNN journalist from Atlanta that gave up a successful career to become a winemaker in Walla Walla, Washington. He named the winery as a pep talk to himself, to ‘trust’ in his decision to change careers and make the switch to becoming a winemaker in the Pacific Northwest.
The 2018 Trust Cellars Riesling displays a bright golden color in the glass. It shows off upfront, elegant aromas of peach blossom, stone fruits, apricot, orange zest and honeyed melon. In addition to having a rare opportunity to procure this wine, it was the fresh, perfectly ripe palate of lush fruits and zesty acidity on the finish that really sold us. This smoothly textured wine is a flat out joy and pleasure to drink with friends or to sip it with a creme fraiche pizza, chicken alfredo and mango shrimp salads. Get it while our limited supply lasts.

Our email special this week, the 2018 Foris Rogue Valley Pinot Noir, is an outrageously good wine for the price. The early vineyard pioneers of the Rogue Valley, like the Gerber family who founded Foris Winery in 1976, sought out the region's Alpine-like seasons to grow Alsatian grape varieties, such as Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. They also found that Pinot Noir acclimated well to the climate and produced elegant, well structured wines, similar to the ones found in Burgundy. The Gerbers planted their first vines between stones and boulders on the terraced slopes of the Rogue Valley’s Siskiyou Mountains. Clones of their original Pinot Noir are now found all over the vineyards of big names in the Oregon wine industry and sprinkled throughout the 135 acres of estate grown vineyards they now farm.
The 2018 Foris Rogue Valley Pinot Noir features all estate grown fruit from their Cedar Ranch and Maple Ranch vineyards. The wine displays a vibrant ruby red color that is as visually appealing as it tastes. Aromas in the glass are lifted, fresh and vibrant with red berry notes of red currants, raspberries and red plum with a floral violet note. There's a sheer elegance and balance to this wine on the palate, with a levity that helps the red berry flavors dance across the tongue and into a silky finish. Be careful. This one is so smooth it will go down so quickly, you’ll almost certainly demand another glass. Pair this one up with a wild mushroom gnocchi, braised duck with a cherry chutney or seared trout on black rice. Cheers.

When your family is among the twelve families that make up the Primum Familiae Vini (First/Best Families of the Wine), which includes names like Antinori, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pol Roger, and Masion Joseph Drouhin among others, you are in rarified wine company. The Perrin family has been deeply involved in the wine business in Southern France for hundreds of years. The 2017 Perrin Vinsobres “Les Cornuds” has a dark garnet color with a rich red rim in the glass. ]]>Our email deal this week is the 2018 Tinto Negro Malbec from Argentina. The mountainsides and valleys surrounding Mendoza, Argentina, are known to grow some of the best Malbec grapes in the world. The color of the wine produced from these grapes is quite dark, sometimes opaque, and hence referred to in Spanish as 'Tinto Negro' meaning black wine. The creators of this weeks deal are two veteran wine personalities from Mendoza, Jeff Mausbach and Alejandro Sejanovich, both of whom have a personal love for Malbec and as such named their winery 'Tinto Negro'. Both had tenure under the world famous Catena winery where, for fifteen years, they worked with Malbec from different vineyard sites and elevations, and witnessed first hand how it develops it's unique identity from the different regions around Mendoza. Fueled by amazing Malbec wines, their friendship and their winery are built with the sole mission of creating their own identity with terrior driven wines that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
The Tinto Negro Malbec is a vibrant, inky red with a purplish rim in the glass. It shows off classic Argentine Malbec aromas, leading with a cool smoke and fall spices folded into blackberry, black cherry, ripe plum fruits and cedar. This is a well built, well structured wine on the palate with layers of black fruits, crushed peppercorn and supple dry tannins. Have fun with this bottle while you drink it on taco Tuesday, pizza Thursday or set it up next to your signature pulled pork barbecue for this weekend's Packer's game. Cheers.

]]>Seven degrees, feels like minus six outside? Sounds like a perfect day for Australian Sauvignon Blanc. Grab your steamed mussels, oysters, shrimp scampi w/ pasta or baked goat cheese in a puff pastry and let’s talk about this week’s email deal, the 2018 d’Arenberg Stump Jump Sauvignon Blanc! d’Arenberg needs little introduction as it is one of the kings of Aussie Shiraz and Rhone varietals. The property was originally founded in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia in 1912. It has since grown to an estate covering almost 345 acres dedicated to focusing on nurturing their old-vine vineyards and traditional winemaking. Their brand is one that is recognized for quality wine production worldwide. The “Stump Jump” name itself is derived from the Stump Jump plough that was designed to jump over the roots and rocks in the Austrlian farm fields making it easier for the horses to keep plowing.
The 2018 Stump Jump Sauvignon Blanc reveals a ripe golden rim around a pale straw color in the glass. The nose on the wine is very buoyant and persuasive with rich tropical aromas of pineapple, green melon, lychee, lime zest, followed by notes of mown grass and lemon drops. These are just the kind of aromas that will lift the spirits on a cold winter day! This is not a light Sauvignon Blanc on the palate however, as it offers a full mouthfeel with aromatic tropical fruits that are lush and flavorful to the last drop. Cheers.

]]>Cheers to our new decade. Sans-souci in French is an expression that means 'without a care'. That is the inspiration for our first email wine of the 2020, the 2017 Sanssouci Cabernet Sauvignon. You might be surprised to find that the brains behind this wine is none other than world famous German winemaker, Ernst Loosen. Along with Laurent Delaunay, he has created a selection of carefree wines in the south western Languedoc region of France at the Abbotts & Delaunay winery near Carcassone.
The Sanssouci Cabernet Sauvignon has that classic dark garnet color in the glass. It features a well structured nose of blackberry, black cherry, currant, plum, backed by notes of chocolate, pencil lead, minerals and tobacco leaf. The structure of this great value Cab shines on the palate without being too heavy handed, featuring a tasty mix of red and black berry fruits, spices and developed dry tannins. Grab a glass or two while you ponder the coming year or be rest assured that this will pair nicely with a grilled NY Strip steak, elk and venison, or your favorite aged hard cheeses. Cheers.

]]>If there is a grape growing heaven somewhere, it just might be in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. With close proximity to the ocean, perfect temperatures and adequate rainfall, I don’t mean to take anything away from the people that make wine there, but it seems like they have it pretty easy. Our email deal this week is the 2017 Evans and Tate 'Smooth Operator' Cabernet Merlot is produced in this area at a place called Wilyabrup. As you may recall from earlier this year, Evans & Tate was founded in 1974 by John Evans and John Tate. The two friends had both spent time in the wine business before teaming together and planting their first vineyard in this world-class grape growing region. They chose to name their first vineyard after Tate’s Daschund, Redbrook. Since its founding, the small, fledgling winery that the two Johns started has become a benchmark producer in the Margaret River.
The 2017 Evans and Tate 'Smooth Operator' Cabernet Merlot displays the classic Aussie intense, nearly opaque deep purple-ish red color in the glass. As you might expect from the color, the wine has plush aromas of black berry, black plum, blueberry, purple flowers and green tobacco leaf. If you are looking for a mouth filling, fruit forward, muy muy friendly, fun wine on the palate that is sumptuous, well rounded and has very soft tannins, this is your wine. It is great for parties or pair it up with sausages, hard cheeses, holiday beef roast or braised duck. Cheers.

]]>Brothers Gerardo Matias and Juan Pablo Michelini founded their Zorzal winery in the highlands of the Gualtallary, a subregion of the Uco Valley, 130miles south of Mendoza and perched at 4800 feet above sea level. This boutique winery has 70 hectares of vines surrounding their estate planted on a mix of sand, stones and granitic limestone. All their grapes are hand harvested earlier in the season than most producers to retain the freshness and complexities of their unique terroir. They use a blend of concrete tanks, concrete eggs, French barrels and larger French oak foudres to maximize the wines aging potential without masking in the nuances that the Gualtallary region provides. Zorzal is a practicing organic and sustainable winery and definitely a place you should keep your eye on. You can start this journey by grabbing a few bottles our email deal this week, the Robert Parker 91 point rated 2018 Zorzal Malbec Terroir Unico.
The Zorzal Malbec Terroir Unico undergoes a 15 day maceration and is aged in concrete tank prior to bottling. It is that neutral container that allows this tasty wine to explode in the glass, displaying all that is great about the Malbec grape. The wine has a vibrant, blood red color in the glass with a fresh nose of black cherry, blackberry and wild raspberry fruits framed by classic cocoa, spice and fresh herbs. On the palate, the wine really sings with fresh fruit character, backed by a savory minerality, velvety tannins, spice and dry finish. An absolute workhorse of a wine to enjoy whenever because it will definitely not disappoint. Montalcino is one of the most highly regarded wine producing regions of Italy, if not the world. Sitting on top of the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, it is a place where the sangiovese grape, in particular, really comes alive. The Caparzo estate first planted vines there over 30 years ago. On their 190 hectare estate, they have over 54 hectares of vineyards that ring the entire hillside of Montalcino. This makes Caparzo the only Brunello producer who has estate grown Sangiovese with multiple different terriors helping give more depth to their prestigious wines. Winery owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased Caparzo in 1998 and works side by side with winemaker Massimo Bracalente using traditional techniques for producing their top notch Brunello's. With wines like our email deal this week, the 2018 Caparzo Sangiovese IGT, their focus on traditional production with modern touches in the cellar help retain more freshness and complexity than their competitors.
The 2018 Caparzo Sangiovese IGT has a crushed velvet red color in the glass with upfront aromas of black cherries, blackberries, wild raspberries, and backed by notes of forest spice and vanilla. The wine is friendly, nicely balanced, and medium weight with fresh red berry notes, and a persistent, long, soft finish. The Caparzo Sangiovese has great versatility for just opening at a party or pairing up with a mixed prosciutto & cheese plate, hors d'oeuvres, Bolognese pasta dish or roasted game bird. It’s delicious, inexpensive and perfect for the holiday party season. Cheers.

]]>Question. If you spend 20+ years working alongside some of the world's most incredible, cult winemakers, will you eventually become one yourself? Ehren Jordan, founder of Failla Wines, just might be able to answer in the affirmative. He began his career as a young man working in restaurants and wine retail. After college, he followed several roommates to California and landed his first job at Joseph Phelps where he was first introduced to the wine-famous, Mr. Bruce Neyers. He left Phelps and headed to France working in the Rhone for Jean Luc Colombo in Cornas and then returned to join Mr. Neyers as he was building his Neyers Vineyards. Along the way, he had run-ins with the infamous Helen Turley and her brother Larry of Turley Wines Cellars. He ended up working with Larry for almost 18 years making some of the most iconic single vineyard Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs ever to be produced in California. When Ehren set out in 1998 to launch his own brand of single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under his wife's family name, Failla, he had become a bit of a cult wine legend himself. Ehren was able to leverage the relationships he had built during his working throughout California to secure inroads to some of the best vineyards and fruit you can find. Always one to want to explore and push the boundaries of his wine experiences, Ehren sought out a new source of Pinot Noir fruit from Oregon. After a few visits to the Willamette Valley, in 2016, he sought to start his second winery that is the source of our email deal this week, the 2017 Failla Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
The 2017 Failla Willamette Valley Pinot Noir really shows what a cult winemaker can do with great fruit. In the glass, the wine has a vibrant ruby color with a well defined, beautiful nose of cherries, wild fall raspberries, and currants with a touch of fresh herb. The palate is focused with a velveteen fruit texture, long, smooth tannins and fresh acidity. If you are a guest for this coming Thanksgiving feast, and looking for that ultimate wine for a host gift to pair with dinner, this show dog will not disappoint. We promise that even your know-it-all uncle who is a wine ‘“expert” will appreciate the skillfully produced Failla wines. Thanks and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

]]>Ridge is an estate that needs little introduction after more than 50 years of being among the top producers in California. Whether it is their creation of the most succinct selection of vineyard designate Zinfandels, to their top five in the world Cabernet, the Monte Bello, Ridge has been showered with awards and accolades. What you might not know is that it all got started when a group of like minded engineers from Stanford University purchased the old Monte Bello winery and began by producing a half barrel of their first Monte Bello cab in 1962. The first Ridge Vineyards single vineyard Zin followed in 1964 and from there it was off to the races. Geyserville in 1966, Lytton Springs in 1972, 5th place at the famous 'Judgement in Paris' in 1976 and, led by the industry famous Paul Draper, the list of accomplishments continued. Our email deal this week, the 2017 Ridge Three Valleys Red has been specially selected for the upcoming holiday. This delicious, 91pt rated wine is definitely worth the stretch and was the clear winner among the many wines we had to pick from.
The 2017 Ridge Three Valleys Red is a blend of 73% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignane, and 2% Grenache. Unlike their single vineyard Zinfandels, the Three Valleys represents an artistry of blending from ten different vineyard sites throughout the Sonoma region. The Zinfandel is combined with the old vine Carignane for brightness and acidity, while the Petite Sirah imbues more depth of color, spice and tannins. The wine has an inky, deep plum red color that coats the glass. The upfront, fresh nose of black raspberry, balsamic strawberry, cherry notes, laced with spring mint and spice are true splendor for your nose. The Three Valleys has a sultry mouthfeel that is saturated in red berry fruits along with a very lively texture and extended finish. The Ridge Three Valleys Red is a perfect go-to wine for Thanksgiving dinner to balance the complex fall flavors that come with the big meal. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Collio sits on the northeastern edge of Italy, parallel to the border of Slovenia. It is Italy's premier growing region for white wines. The notoriety of these terroir driven, mineraly wines can be attributed to the famous Felluga family who came to the region from Croatia. Like her father Marco Felluga, Patrizia left the family winery to make her own wines that she felt were true expressions of the area. Unlike the majority of the wineries in the region, including her fathers, that produce single varietal wines, Patrizia began by making only two white wines that were blends of equal parts of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Sauvignon blanc. The first, our email deal this week, the 2018 vintage of the Zuani Collio Bianco, she aged in stainless steel. The other blend is aged in small format oak barrels. For both wines, the grapes are vinified separately and then blended to perfectly balance and complement the qualities of the other grapes in the wine.
Like a perfect square, the Zuani's four grape varieties frame this exquisitely balanced white wine. In the glass, the wine displays a bright sun gold color with bright white rim. It has a beautiful, elegant, subtle nose of white peach, citrus blossom, pear, melon and a distinct mineral note. The wine is broad and fulfilling with flavors that touch every inch of the palate with levity, balance and a freshness that lasts long after each sip. This wine is pure enjoyment in the glass with sophisticated elegance that can be thoroughly enjoyed on its own or make a meal sing when paired with a lovely bowl of sautéed mussels, Pasta di Frutti di Mare, baked salmon, seared pork loin or seared scallops.

Jack and Catherine Niven were the first wine pioneers to see the potential of San Luis Opispo as a viable viticultural region. Matt and Finn were the first pioneers to pitch a Rose on a day in November in the middle of a snow storm. The former, consulted with wine programs at UC Davis and Fresno State while they developed their Paragon vineyard in 1973, which is now the oldest standing vineyard in the region. That later, thought the deal was so good for a Rose we are big fans of that you wouldn’t even notice it was snowing outside. Right? Catherine wanted to create her own vineyard and produce her own wines from vineyards outside their home. She did not want to follow the conventions of California winemaking and sought her inspiration from European style winemaking. Sourcing her Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit from the Paragon vineyard, Catherine created wines with balance and elegance. She named her winery Baileyana after the location where she met Jack for the first time.
The 2016 Baileyana Rosé is a season ending(lol) special with a very limited number of bottles available. It is a rosé of Pinot Noir that is harvested at two points in the season, first to capture freshness and vibrancy, then second to develop ripeness and depth of fruit character. In the glass the wine is an off-pink salmon color. That vibrancy comes out with the first whiff featuring crisp citrus notes leading into a cascade of watermelon, raspberry, strawberry fruits and rose petal. On the palate, the wine has good levity and is delicate with a nice seamless texture and smooth finish. This wine will be the perfect wine to cool down with after you’ve been toasting yourself by the fire and would be a great compliment to a Nicoise salad, Florida Stone Crab claws or a Parmesan/Citrus Pasta. Season's Greetings!

If you want to taste a true Rhone Valley, French terrior driven wine in the glass, pick up a bottle of this week's wine special, the Boutinot's Rasteau 'Les Blanquettes Escarpees' 2016. France's famed Rhone Valley is split into two sub regions, the northern and southern Rhone. The north is known for their powerful, yet supple, rich reds made solely from the Syrah grape. In the south, the reds are primarily blends made with Grenache as the dominant red variety and mixed with other notable varieties such as Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, and Carignan to create a more complex tapestry of aromas and flavors. Within the southern Rhone are many of the world's most famous AOC’s, including Châteauneuf du Pape, Tavel, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Carianne to name a few. Just a bit east of the same south facing ridge as the Cairanne AOC, is the smaller and lesser known AOC of Rasteau. Rasteau is a much more intimate growing region than their neighbors and they produce more traditional French wine that are truly reflections of the land they are produced in. The wines are heavily influenced by the warm Mediterranean sea climate and the wild herbs and grasses that dominate the region.
The fruit for the 2015 Boutinot Rasteau is hand harvested from south facing, hillside escarpments (Les Blanquettes Escarpees). The wine is natural yeast fermented in open top wood fermenters and aged in 600L barrels for 24 months. Boutinot prefers the larger format barrels to give their wines just enough spice and backbone without overpowering the flavor of the wine with wood. The wine has a definite dark, heavy red color from the dark, older vine Grenache used in the blend, which includes 28% Syrah and 7% Mourvedre. We were smitten by the nose of the wine with its layers of dusty cherry, blackberry, red currant, bramble berry fruits mixed with rosemary, sage, white pepper and lavender. The warmer growing season gave this wine more heft, richness and depth on the palate with plenty of fruit and lingering, toasted spice notes. Suggested food pairing is wild boar ragu over pasta, a marinated venison casserole or slow roasted lamb shank. Cheers.

Bogle wines sitting on a shelf at Barriques are a rare thing. That wasn’t always so. I remember the Bogle Petite Syrah occupying a regular spot on the Wall of 100 for years. During the early 2000's though, the quality dropped in their quest to occupy space in every grocery store from here to eternity and, outside of the occasional Phantom Red that might make an appearance, Bogle and Barriques were splits-ville. We were predictably skeptical when the 2016 Bogle Cab landed on our desks. We tried it, twice in fact, just to make sure our thoughts about it were right the first time. It was great and it made for an easy decision to buy a pile of it and feature it as this weeks email deal. The Bogle family, which after 50 years of farming their land, is still managing the winery day-to-day, has made a huge sustainability push and are not only a California Certified Sustainable Winery, but in 2018 the were awarded the Green Medal Leader Award, which recognizes the vineyard that best demonstrates environmentally sound, socially equitable and economically viable sustainability practices. Nice work and certainly makes it that much easier of a wine to recommend to you.
The 2016 Bogle Cabernet Sauvignon displays a more inky, slightly opaque purple color in the glass with a vibrant red rim. It has a pleasantly rich nose of blackberry, mulberry, cassis and blueberry fruits, framed by notes of cocoa and spices. The palate is very well balanced and full of red berry fruits, red currant, cherry, and backed with a peppery spice and tobacco leaf. The velvety touch of this Cabernet works well to just enjoy in the glass, yet can be paired up with a teriyaki seared flank steak, roasted Muscovy duck breast with a cherry glaze or beef chili.

]]>Last night my wife stole my bottle of Pinot. It happened to be a bottle of this week's email deal, the 2018 Underwood Pinot Noir. It was an impressively sneaky move on her part. It was about 7pm and I had just rolled in from work. I set the bottle down on the counter, opened the fridge to see what I might be able to shove in my face and when I turned around, BAM, it was nowhere to be found. Then I heard the back door open and a “Bye hon, I have book club and should be home by 10.” NOOOOOOOOO. Door shut. Too late. She was gone. Fortunately for me, despite my wife stealing my ‘sample’ bottle, it’s possible that I might have had a few ‘sample’ bottles of the Underwood Pinot the previous four or five nights and, if I tried hard, I could draw upon those past experiences and craft my sales pitch. So here it goes. We are big fans of the wines from the folks at the Union Wine Company. Between their Underwood and Kings Ridge labels, their wines frequently fill the wine racks at our houses and are featured prominently on our shelves. In fact, you can probably catch me most nights in the summer with a can of either the Underwood Pinot Noir or Pinot Gris in the “water bottle” holder of my cruiser as I make my way along the Southwest Commuter bike path. What can I say, I get thirsty when I’m zipping along at 8 mph.
The 2018 Underwood Pinot has a bright ruby garnet color with a vibrant rim in the glass. It rolls out a pleasant, fresh, focused nose of wild raspberry, cherry, and pomegranate aromas mixed in a cedar spice. On the palate the wine has a nice pop of red berry flavors and is well balanced with an elegant, smooth finish. We have enjoyed this wine from the very first time we tried it. Year in and year out, it continues to offer a great quality Oregon Pinot Noir drinking experience at a very reasonable price. It is an incredibly friendly wine to enjoy by the glass or place it up next to a poached salmon, strawberry salad, baked chicken, or vegetable lasagna. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Cheers.
Our email deal this week is the 2016 Chateau Montfaucon Vin de France Rouge 'Le Petit Baron'. Chateau Montefaucon is a smaller estate that was established in the 11th century in the southern Rhone, along the Rhone River. Before it became the estate for the local Baron, the building was less of a chateau and more of a fortification, along with many others on the river to protect the French kingdom from the Holy German Empire. It wasn't until the 15th century when the fort was rebuilt into a chateau by the Laudun family and the king of France gave the title of Baron to Montfaucon. Fast forward several centuries to 1995 when a descendant of the family, Rudolphe de Pins, returned from his wine studies and working abroad at Henscke in Australia's Barossa Valley and for Vieux Telegraphe in Châteauneuf du Pape and began to re-establish the family's vineyards. Rudolphe started with the estate's original 18 hectares and has now extended his vineyard holdings to over 60 hectares of mostly Rhone varieties, with the majority of his vineyards being over 40yrs old.
The 2016 Chateau Montfaucon 'Le Petit Baron' is a Vin de France, Rhone red that Rudolphe created as an everyday drinker. It is an equal blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The wine shows off a saturated purple color with a vibrant fuschia rim in the glass and is packed with ripe, juicy aromas of pomegranate, plum, blackberry, balsamic strawberry, violet and kirsh. Those same fruits pervade the palate with an inky intensity and juicy character that are enough to sink your teeth into with a long, plush finish. This wine is fun and enjoyable to drink and very versatile in its ability to pair with cheese/meat boards, bacon wrapped dates, wild boar meatballs, or slow cooked barbecue ribs.

The long-est, small-est, large-est, first-est and best-est. Our deal this week, the 2016 True Myth Chardonnay, has all of these and more. It comes from the long-est continually producing vineyard in California’s Edna Valley (the state’s small-est AVA). This site also happen to be the large-est vineyard and large-est Chard planting in that small-est of AVAs. The Niven family, who were among the first-est to establish wine production in this area, were also among the first-est in the Central Coast to attain 100% SIP Certified Sustainability for their renowned Paragon Vineyard. Isn’t that the best-est? Give full credit to Jack Niven who had the foresight to seek out the Edna Valley in the 70’s when it was better known for dairy cows and garbanzo beans and turn it into an area specializing in world-class Chardonnay.
The color of the True Myth Chardonnay pours into the glass like liquid gold with an intensely colored core. You’ll have no need to go on a tropical vacation after you pour yourself a glass and get blasted by aromas of mango, melon, pineapple, and tangerine with citrus and a mineraly backdrop. The palate is where this wine really shines, it is almost like you can bite into the deep tropical fruits that it fills the mouth with. It is packed with rich flavors and creamy in texture with a lushness that just won't quit. A great party wine that shows well in the glass and can be appreciated by everyone. In addition to pairing well with people, the True Myth will work quite nicely with sea bass with a mango salsa or summer shrimp salad.
