2019 - One of the synonymous names with the highest quality wines of northern Italy is Alois Lageder, a sustainable/renewable energy winery with a focus on biodiversity and biodynamically produced wines. Fifth and sixth generation Lageder family members oversee the wine production, marketing and vineyard management. Their influence has led other producers to implement similar programs to help preserve their soil, minimize impact of agriculture and maintain their pristine landscape for the future generations.
Chardonnay is well suited to the cool growing season of this area and excels in the chalky gravelly soils. Alois Lageder takes a section of the grapes and ferments them on their lees in concrete for 4 months, leaving the remaining to ferment in stainless tanks outside in the naturally cool temperatures. This wine displays a bright, white to golden color that is perfectly clear in the glass. Vibrant aromas of Granny Smith apple, pear, lime zest, crushed stone and pear blossom will deeply penetrate your sniffer. On the palate, there's the vibrancy of the Alto Adige, focused, taut and filled with refreshing fall fruits, driven mineral structure and a crisp, dry finish. The Alois Lageder Chardonnay is a dream wine for a sommelier to put on a restaurant wine list as it delivers way above its pay grade and is a treat of a wine for food pairing. Easily pair up with Chicken Piccata, a grilled shrimp pesto pasta, or pan fried Turbot with a caper butter reduction. Cheers.
