OVR. Old. Vine. Red. The Marietta Cellars OVR Lot wines are not ones you turn to when you want consistency from year to year. You’ll find them consistently good, just not with consistent in their taste profiles. That’s kind of atypical for a wine at this price but it's part of the reason why we are so excited to check it out each year. This wine also hits the market without a vintage. Instead, they use a lot number, in this case Lot #68, to differentiate the bottling from one year to another. During production they develop each grape variety that goes into the blend separately. The components can come from different vintages, some of which are aged in oak, some in stainless steel, all resulting in a wine that hopefully has more dimension and balance. As is typical of past years, our email deal this week, the Marietta Cellars OVR Lot#68, is a blend of Zinfandel with a balance of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Carignane and other Italian red varieties thrown in for good measure.
The wine is super versatile and can pair up with herb roasted chicken, duck or barbecue salmon and yet can handle a full rack of lamb or porterhouse steak. The OVR also makes for a great party wine so if you are on the hook for hosting family or friends during the upcoming holiday season, you’ll be happy you bought this one by the case.
