Xavier Vignon has struck again, sending us the newly minted 2017 Xavier Lirac. Xavier is a well known consultant throughout the Rhone Valley, advising some of the best wineries on their top Chateauneuf du Pape wines and beyond. He cut his teeth working the soils of the different Rhone appellations for over twenty years until he began producing wines under his own name. He now is producing wines from some of the best vineyards in Gigondas, Chateauneuf du Pape, Cairanne, Vaceyras, Beaumes de Venise, Rasteau and Lirac, showcasing the best these terroirs have to offer.
It should not be surprising with a nickname like ‘black wine’, that the 2017 Xaiver Lirac starts out by showing its nearly opaque black, inky color in the glass. This wine is a beast, with a seemingly endless depth of blackberry, blueberry, red raspberry and plum fruits layered between aromas of tapenade, white pepper, cocoa and violet. With an inky weight on the tongue, it pours forth with a full encompassing red berry fruit flavor while being well rounded front to back and ending in a savory finish. Show dog? For sure! Perfect to run and show off to your wine friends, but also quite appropriate if you pair it up with a red wine glazed lamb shoulder or Korean pan seared pork belly. Enjoy!
