Neil & Maria Empson founded one of the best Italian import wine portfolios in the US. After years of building their book with world class producers, they sought to have a wine of their own, so they purchased a wine estate in the hills of Santa Lucia, close to Pisa, Italy. They contacted their close friend and master winemaker, Franco Bernabei to create a classic Chianti estate. Their passion was to work with the grape they came to love, Sangiovese, along with the historical soils and terroir of Tuscany. Our email deal this week, the 2016 Toscolo Chianti, is a product of their years of experience and love for the wine from Italy.
The Toscolo Chianti is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. The wine is aged in barrels for six months and then up to two years in bottle prior to release. It has a good deep and dense red color in the glass, backed up with fresh aromas of black cherry, red currant, cranberry fruits, and finishing on the nose with just a hint of toasted spices and baking chocolate. The mouthfeel is bright, full of red berry fruits, lively acidity and just enough edge to make this a table wine. The Toscolo is a super versatile, everyday type of wine for anything from traditional spaghetti to a loaded Chicago pizza slice, herb encrusted pork loin or salty hard cheeses.
