2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2019. The Mohua Sauvignon Blanc has made a showing as an email deal wine in each of these years. The 2018 vintage, which you are going to get the opportunity to try this year, is the best we can remember. We keep coming back to this wine because it is a simply delicious NZ Sauv Blanc at a great price. The winery itself is run by two generations of the McLachlan family. Aside from the fact that it is a family run operation with all the requisite passion filled hoo-ha on their website, their dedication towards protecting the wine's namesake bird helps give this wine true soul. The Mohua is one of New Zealand’s rarest birds and the winery provides financial support for this songbird in the form of monetary support to the NZ Department of Conservation as well as personally helping to rebuild their habits. Once again, nice work McLachlans.
We tried this wine several times over four days of being opened and the richness and power never faded. The 2018 Mohua Sauvignon Blanc displays much more brightness and delineation in the nose and on the palate than in prior vintages. In the glass, the wine has a platinum white gold colored hue. You can’t help but notice the vibrant and fresh nose of lime sherbet, ruby grapefruit, lemon verbena, and wild tropical notes. The mouthfeel has that perfect zesty quality to enliven your taste buds without being zingy, and is fresh, vibrant, dry and crisp. If you are fearing that summer is going away, keep it alive in your glass with this drop of sunshine. A wine for pairing with a shrimp scampi, baked trout, seared scallops, oysters with a mignonette sauce, or a tropical salad.
