The family behind our email wine this week, the 2017 G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso, asks their wine to touch your heart, not talk loud or flex their muscles. I’m down with that. Aldo Vaira started producing wine at his estate in the Piedmont region of Italy in the early 1970s. He was early into the organic certification process and is a true farmer at heart. He now oversees a fairly large portfolio of wines with the help of his wife, daughter and two sons who are all actively involved in the business. While perhaps being best known for their Barolo and Barbera de Albas, our wine today is a true Piedmontese blend of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera along with the rare varieties of Fresia and Albarossa. It is a true pleasure to drink.

The heirloom varietals that make up the 2017 G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso show up as a perfect dark ruby color with a dark red core in the glass. The wine has a gorgeous floral nose with roses and pink flowers mixed in a compote of cherry, raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, pomegranate and a dusty spice mix. You will find a great fruit intensity that fills the palate with soft, silky tannins and an elegant finish. We like to call this a wine for ‘whenever’ and it will appease even the most discerning wine lover. It is terrific by the glass but, given its roots, is certainly built for food pairing. Enjoy it with slow roasted short ribs in a rosemary/fruit chutney glaze, sauteed wild mushroom risotto or lamb ragu.
