The 2014 Chilcas Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc is the best wine deal we’ve had in 2019. It boggled our minds that a wine could be produced with so much quality in the bottle and have it make the 11,000+ mile trip to our doorstep where we can offer it up to you for $9.99. The Cabernet Franc grapes come from a single vineyard in Chile’s Maule Valley, just 30km from the base of the Andes Mtns. The soil composition in this area is decomposed volcanic rock set on a steep slope. The mix of warm sun and ocean influence on the vineyard gives the vines a more Mediterranean atmosphere, featuring warm days and cooler nights. Grapes are carefully hand harvested and then go through a cold maceration for 7 days prior to fermentation to extract the best color. Post fermentation and malo-lactic fermentation is in stainless followed by the wine being aged in a mix of new and used French barrels for 12-16 months, then rested in the bottle before shipping. Now folks, you just can't put that much effort and cost into producing a wine and not be impressed that we can sell it in our fair state of Wisconsin, so very far away from the Andes, at such an unbelievable price. In the glass, oh la la, the color is a dark red, garnet color. The wine has a classic Cab Franc nose with upfront pepper giving way to wild raspberry, cassis and black cap fruits all intermingled in sweet peppers, forest, tobacco, vanilla and leather. Now that's just the introduction, the real show comes on the palate which is loaded in spice, wild berry fruits, eucalyptus and an earthy dry finish. It has just enough chew to sink your teeth into without being cloying and has a lasting heat to the palate. Put a quick chill on a bottle and it makes for a great glass pour, but will also pair up nicely with Churrasco style meats, intense sharp cheeses and your favorite pizza.
