The wines from Cycles Gladiator took the market in the early 2000’s by storm. With its avant-garde label and premium quality, the wine quickly became one of the world's most recognizable wine brands. This ultimately attracted the attention of a large company who scooped up the brand, lost founding winemaker Adam Lazarre and drove it into mediocrity and a doomed life as a middling grocery store brand. Enter the Wine Hooligans in 2013 who reacquired the brand and brought back Adam to head up production of the Cycle Gladiator. His original vision that started with the iconic label of the nude bicyclist wines with a notion that his wines would taste like a wine 3x the price yet could be enjoyed nightly because of their affordability, has been restored. His star wine in the line up back then and now true today is his Petite Sirah and the 2017 vintage is our email deal this week..
As one might expect from a Petite Sirah, the 2017 Cycles Gladiator displays an opaque, inky black plum color that stains the glass with a purplish rim. It is very lush on the nose with a ripe compote of fruit aromas featuring a mix of blackberries, bramble berry, plum and black cherry. The inky-ness of the wine really shows on the palate and it is laced with intense blueberry and wild berry flavors that linger long on the tongue with a tingling spice. This is a powerhouse by the glass and is also perfect with a juicy hamburger off the grill, barbecued meats and marinated beef kabobs. Welcome back.
