So, how about that Chilean Cinsault? Pretty great huh? We are going to go easy on your wine senses this week with an old favorite. Our email deal this week is produced by Neil and Maria Empson in the heart of Tuscany. They produce it as a pure expression of their love for their country and the mountainous region of the Maremma that it is made in. In fact, the name of the wine means “ancient mountain” and it should be of little surprise that it is predominantly made from Sangiovese with small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit for this wine is sourced from older hillside vines and aged in a mix of Slavonian and French oak barrels. I’ve never been there, but if you conjure the most quaint picture of Tuscany in your mind including the stone estate perched on a hilltop surrounded by rolling fields of grapevines and a gorgeous sunny day, I’m pretty sure that is what you would see at the home of the 2014 Monte Antico Toscana.
The 2014 Monte Antico scooped 91pts from well-regarded wine reviewer, James Suckling. It displays a vibrant red garnet color with a dark core in the glass. The glass will throw off a well balanced nose with a mix of violet aromas, black cherry, red plum, wild herbs and dusted peppery spice. This wine’s longevity in the market is most likely due to the very seamless texture of red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, and savory minerals rounded out with light oak notes and a smooth finish. Enjoy by the glass and you’ll also find it the most versatile wine for imbibing with a hearty lasagna, beef bolognese, hard salty Italian cheeses, breaded pork chops or blackened salmon. Enjoy.
