Our email deal this week is the 2016 Castillo del Baron Monastrell. The wine is produced in the far southeast corner of Spain in Murcia, a lesser-known wine region tucked between Valencia to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Murcia itself is home to three DO appellations, Bullas, Jumilla and Yelca(where our wine comes from) and is cheese-famous for “Drunken Goat”, a Monastrell grape pumice rind aged goat cheese. Yelca is distinguished from being just another area of sun soaked vineyards by the elevated altitudes of their vineyard sites. The bodega behind Castillo del Baron has quickly established itself as one of the best sources for inexpensive, quality wines from Spain. Fortunate for us this week, they are especially adept with Monastrell, the dominant varietal in Yecla, and also known in France as Mouvedre.
The 2016 Castillo del Baron Monastrell has a fairly opaque, deep blood red color in the glass. The nose on the wine follows suit with the classic black fruit of the Monastrell featuring black berry, plum, cassis and a mixed aroma compote of roasted fruits, spice, vanilla and violets. Earthy dark fruits will saturate your palate with highlights of boysenberry and dry tannins. Unsurprisingly, it absolutely shines when paired with Drunken Goat cheese, Manchego or rosemary encrusted Asiago. When serving, we might suggest closing the laptop, shutting off your phone and enjoying by the glass, or if food is in order, this will pair quite nicely with spicy pork, roasted duck or, our favorite, chicken wings.
