Most savvy Chardonnay drinkers are familiar with the California, classically over extracted, richly oaked styles of Napa, and the supple, well delineated and sometimes bright version of their sibling wines from Sonoma. You may be less familiar with Chardonnay that is grown and produced in California's Central Coast, specifically the area of Paso Robles. Winemaker and viticulturist, Brian & Stephy Terrizzi, went in search of quality Chardonnay fruit from this area to put their spin on this popular varietal. Their approach with our email deal this week, the 2017 Broadside Chardonnay, is to minimize the over extraction or heavy oaking of the flavors, in favor of a less-is-more in the cellar approach to create a wine with freshness, balance and which captures the Central Coast terroir in the glass. The Broadside is wild fermented with natural occurring yeast flora on the grapes to give the wine its own identity and unique flavor profile.
The 2017 Broadside Chardonnay is a lighter white gold color with a medium weight viscosity in the glass. It pours forth a crescendo of aromas with a mix of pear and stone fruit notes backed with a silky creaminess. The wine features a perfectly weighted palate of fall tree fruits, nectarine and citrus that are enriched by a partial malo-lactic fermentation giving the wine body. To enhance the mouthfeel component of the wine, 20% of it is aged in neutral French oak to give the wine a little spine.
